The Gap in the Pack

High Above has long been a champion of hip packs, but as the team tackled longer rides in demanding terrain, they recognized the limitations of waist-mounted storage. Riders needed a stable, bounce-free way to carry more water and gear without sacrificing comfort or mobility. Inspired by the snug fit of trail-running vests, the idea for the Supernatural hydration pack was born—a product designed to bridge the gap between minimalist hip packs and bulkier backpacks.

We did not fully realize what we’d gotten into. Designing a vest pack that fits a variety of body types is harder than doing it for a hip pack. The aggressive stance of modern riding requires some counterintuitive fitment to ensure the pack is comfortable on long rides leaned over the handlebars. We also wanted a unique design that charted the right aesthetic direction for High Above, was waterproof, and could be manufactured in the US. It was a lot of iterations.

The dual sternum strap system offers a precisely engineered fit for most, with soft-touch buckles and elastic webbing that work together to eliminate bounce while maintaining breathability.

The Science of Stability

The Supernatural is not just another hydration pack—it’s a carefully engineered solution for riders who need a secure, comfortable, and functional way to carry gear on long rides. High Above’s iterative design process led to over 50 prototypes, refining every aspect of fit, storage, and durability. The result? A hydration pack that stays put even on the roughest descents, keeps your essentials easily accessible, and is tough enough to handle season after season of abuse.

When I asked the team how their extensive experience designing high-performance hip packs shaped their approach to the Supernatural, this was their reply: “In terms of design, we didn’t take much directly from our hip packs, aside from a focus on durability and applying some key lessons from that side of our work. For example, zippers are often the first failure point on packs, so we positioned it away from the mud spray zone to increase longevity. We fine-tuned the bladder pocket size and securing method so it carries well at different loads. The foam in the back panel helps keep water from getting too warm and improves comfort. Additional we made intentional material choices to ensure this pack lasts a lifetime of hard use. This was also our first CAD-designed product, which allowed us to achieve its unique shape—both round and angular. Expect to see that design language gradually migrate into our hip packs. More than anything, this project was about solving problems we saw in existing packs and running vests while working from first principles to build what we felt a riding vest should be.”
